Imagination

Metaffordances and perception-action dynamics

Imagination is intimately related to affordance perception. Perceiving an affordance is not merely seeing what is present — it involves seeing future action possibilities - seeing an event now...extending into the so-called future. But event-perception is based on spatio-temporal event information; this was Gibson's insight. Metaffordances extend our ability to "see the future" by amplifying the information present. Imagination goes further. Imagination is not fantasy; it's visualising what is possible given the effects that previous information had on us. That's not memory, it's imagination. Imagination is the ability to visualise what is possible.
Imagination is the key to creativity, problem-solving, and innovation. It allows us to envision new possibilities, explore alternative scenarios, and generate novel ideas. It's the foundation of human creativity, innovation, and leadership.
