An Open Letter of Gratitude to the United States of America on its 250th Anniversary

July 4, 2026

To the people of the United States of America,

On the occasion of your 250th anniversary, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the profound influence the United States has had on my life.

Although I was not born in America, your country has given me experiences and opportunities that have shaped both my professional journey and my personal life in ways I will always treasure.

My academic path led me from research in artificial intelligence to the ideas of James J. Gibson and the American tradition of ecological psychology. The work of Gibson and those who extended his insights—particularly Michael Turvey, Claudia Carello, Robert Shaw, and Scott Kelso—transformed my understanding of information and perception. Their influence continues to guide my thinking today.

I was honoured to be offered the opportunity to continue my academic journey at the University of Connecticut, an institution with a distinguished place in the history of ecological psychology. Under the guidance of my mentor, Prof Michael Turvey, I was able to develop the skills that would serve me well in the future. It was also there that I met my beloved late wife, Dr. Mira Peter. Meeting Mira was the greatest gift America ever gave me. Our life together is a major event that will always resonate and for which I remain forever grateful.

Re-living our wedding day with Mike Turvey acting in place of Mira's father, giving her away:

America has long been a nation where curiosity, innovation, and the free exchange of ideas have flourished. Those values have enriched not only its own people but countless others around the world, including me.

As you celebrate 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, I extend my sincere thanks to the American people, your universities, your scientists, your teachers, and all those who have contributed to advancing knowledge and opportunity. Your influence has reached far beyond your shores.

May the next 250 years continue to be marked by freedom, discovery, generosity, and hope.

Happy 250th Birthday, America.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Paul Treffner
